The Entrails of Power

There is a natural tendency that drives an individual to deny his human condition and individuality, which allows him to achieve a state of unconsciousness; a state in which he loses himself and dissolves his existence as a conscious being into one of pure instinct. The individual can still feel himself in this state, even intensely so, but he does so without the burden of his conscience. One can lose himself in numerous ways, by way of drugs, alcohol, sex, music, etc., however, these methods only produce a temporary or momentary escape. The most powerful and long lasting method, lasting beyond just a few moments or hours for many years and in some cases a lifetime, is joining a cause. What we globally experience since the early teens of this century is an incredible idealization, which was thought of as a thing of the past, particularly since the collapse of the fascist and communist ideologies in the last century, now powered by a sort of mixed causes, which can not be labelled as left or right anymore.  Joining a cause, something which appears to be bigger than the individual - a movement, a cult, a religion - all capable of becoming an ideology and offering a way to view the world as a construct of Us and Them . “It is always the enemy who started it, even if he was not the first to speak out, he was certainly planning it; and if he was not actually planning it, he was thinking of it; and, if he was not thinking of it, he would have thought of it.” (Elias Canetti, “Crowds and Power” (1960)) The adopted ideology will culminate in protest marches, rallies or services as the most intoxicating event in which the individual dissolves and becomes a part of a roaring crowd, the individuals separateness ceases to exist, the personal does not matter any longer - whether rich or poor, sick or healthy, old or young - we feel one with the thousands around us and subjugate under the power and cause of the Masses.
